Enough of the white stuff…

9 Nov

Time to get going… We left at first light and had a good day’s sail from Milford to Port Washington at the west end of Long Island. The winds were strong gusting to 30+ so we rolled the jib away partly with mizzen still raised – still lots of sail. We made good time and got to Port Washington about 2. We picked up a yellow mooring and called the water taxi. Matt came out to get us and took us to a place to fill 2 jerry cans with diesel (at a premium price) and then on to a grocery store. He was quite a character and very helpful. He is the same guy who hauled the Heffler’s boat off the rocks after Sandy. (He also told us to look up his nephew in Rum Cay, Bahamas when we got there – Brian Myron, he runs a marina there.) There were some signs of Sandy but most visible of all, lots of people driving around looking for gas – and the price of gas! It was a cold night and our DC Gremlin was back at it robbing us of power so we had PBJs for supper and a very early night to get a jump on the following day. Watching the clear night sky was fascinating with an enormous number of air travel above, countless moving dots of lights overhead competing with the  comparatively static stars.
