Peanut Island and Other Sights of Our New Backyard

Yesterday was Jane’s last day with us so we dinghied out to Peanut Island in the afternoon – fantastic! So worth doing. You’re right John – a great diversion! On the way back we saw a ray flapping by in the turquoise water and near a sandbar, some of those huge starfish (the endangered ones). Out by Peanut Island was a takeout (on a pontoon boat) – like a fish’n chip van! There are a lot of really rough looking boats anchored about here – liveaboards – some even have floats alongside with tiki huts and even saw a palm tree at one!! The liveaboards are quite interesting to listen to as they party on in the wee hours.

Sunday, Jane and I went for an afternoon cruise on Aurora II, a Trumpy yacht. (couldn’t get David’s head out of the bilge). This is a beautifully restored Chesapeake boat. Some of our other neighbours in this yard include Aphrodite – a really gorgeous classic commuter boat built in the 30s and used to hunt subs in the war!! Also (amongst others), are Diamonds are Forever (the most expensive luxury charter megayacht in the world) and Music, a sweet perfect sloop (part of Jimmy Buffet’s fleet). Oh my, such window shopping and daydreaming!!

Jane left early this morning – I’m going to miss my buddy. I really don’t do engines so it has been great to spend time with Jane and explore and walk and workout. At least she got a swim in the warm turquoise Florida waters before she headed home.

Oh and then there’s the boat… well we keep at it but progress is slow…… but the wind is strong from the east for at least the next week and there are “elephants” in the Gulf Stream – and perhaps a rage or two in the Bahamas. We hope to get this all fixed and head to Miami to be poised for takeoff.

Finally catching up again, lots of problems, but warm weather and you don’t have a schedule. The last 2 are the most important. Did you and Jane get to make bread? Happy New Year to both of you. gail

Hi Gail – yes it is warm and we are enjoying that. We are finally unwinding and feeling relaxed in spite of engine troubles. Jane and I had good times spent together but no bread making – couldn’t get David out of the bilge long enough and that is the floor of the galley 🙂 Hope to take the boat out tomorrow to test the engine repairs. HNY to you and Rod. – Mary.
