All the way to Beaufort (i.e. Bew-fort) SC

15 May

A new day, a new navigational challenge – Field’s Cut, but we had to start late to time this one. So we went to a nearby coffee shop and had a leisurely start at 0900. At 1030 we had a bridge opening at Causton Bluff Bridge, kissed bottom at Thunderbolt, then felt our way carefully through Elba Island Cut at 1105 – charts and marks did not match at all here. At 1112 we crossed the GA-SC border. Soon after was Field’s Cut which we were through by 1133. Just before we entered the cut a Quebec trawler roared up from the wrong direction  and asked “is dis way to ICW?” Field’s Cut was uneventful. Entering Ramshorn Creek we touched again which was weird as there are no warnings here at all! We had planned to stop at Hilton Head to anchor but were ahead of schedule so continued and for mile marker 567 on we had the jib working and she romped across Port Royal Sound getting up to 8.3 knots with 20 knots breeze and lively waves from the wind against current.  Made it to Beaufort SC by 1700 which we had not expected at all. We both had really wanted to see this little town that so many other cruisers  like. it turns out that it is the home of Candice one of the recent 4 finalists of American Idol – and yes, a charming laid back town.
